On May 31, ZUMIX launched its 35th anniversary summer with an afternoon of live music and dance at Boston’s iconic Hatch Memorial Shell, featuring multiple ZUMIX students, staff and alumni, plus several local dance groups, including the Floor Lords (below).
The concert happened in collaboration with the Esplanade Association, kicking off its free GroundBeat concert series, which provides free live music and arts programming at the Hatch Shell. Despite rainy weather, the ZUMIX community showed up, and dozens of families, friends and community members had a fabulous time!
Several youth ensembles, including the Zukix (above), performed throughout the afternoon.
ZUMIX community members got up to dance!
ZUMIX board chair Johnny Giraldo led a salsa dance lesson, and members of his salsa company, Salsa y Control, performed onstage.
Former ZUMIX staff member Dan Fox received an award (presented by ZUMIX alum Mario Jarjour) highlighting Dan’s contributions to the Z-Tech audio engineering program at ZUMIX.
Food vendors, bubbles and live painting made the afternoon even more magical!
The ZUMIX staff band performed a high-energy set as part of the day.
ZUMIX alum Nick Shea, a local rapper and visual artist, also performed.
As ZUMIX marks 35 years of empowering young people, it was a special treat to perform at a quintessential Boston venue and spend the day celebrating music and community together.
