ZUMIX programs inspire young people to explore the arts, particularly music, as a means of self-expression.
If you like to sing, rap, write, or are interested in music production or engineering, ZUMIX is the place for you!
Check out our new summer programs!
Summer programs begin the week of July 5th, 2010 and run until the week of August 27th. Make sure you have your ZUMIX application in and have done your placement interview by June 1st. Questions?
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
ZUMIX participants can learn to play an instrument, start a band, or sing in a chorus.
Private lessons - Our music instructors, many of whom have been with ZUMIX for nearly a decade, are as culturally diverse as our students. We currently offer lessons in piano, guitar, bass, drums, voice, brass and woodwinds (NEW!).
Ensembles - playing in a group presents an entirely different learning experience. Current ensembles include: Hip Hop Band (original youth hip hop), RockEd (our youth rock-band program),
Arias (youth-led rock band), The UBs (youth-led rock band), and The Divercity Band (youth pop-cover band).
Higher education - our partnership with Berklee College of music offers more serious students the opportunity to further their studies at one of the most prestigious music schools in the country.
SONGWRITING AND PERFORMANCE
ZUMIX's songwriters use their voices, rhythm, and energy to express what's on their minds. They take their messages to the street, performing locally and touring throughout the Northeast. From Hip Hop to Rock, students express
themselves through a wide variety of popular music. Our studio allows more advanced students to record their original music to CD.
Z-TECH (MUSIC TECHNOLOGY)
Through Z-TECH, ZUMIX provides after-school technical training programs that introduce youth, ages 12-18, to advanced audio and computer technologies. Z-TECH programs are hands-on, giving participants access to state-of-the-art
audio equipment, a digital music production lab, recording studio, and computer graphics station. Z-TECH graduates join the ZUMIX Tech-Crew as paid technicians, supporting ZUMIX programs and other agencies throughout the city.
ZUMIX RADIO
ZUMIX launched a youth-run radio station from our headquarters in 2005. ZUMIX Radio enables our participants to share their music, ideas, and concerns with listeners while gaining invaluable feedback from local residents.
ZUMIX Radio broadcasts locally on 1630AM and now is streaming live at zumix.org! While you're listening, cruise around the radio schedule and get to know the folks that make the station
happen. We have a great blend of music programs, featuring Hip Hop, Rock, Reggaeton, Jazz and other styles. We also have Spanish-language programs, including a public affairs show ~ Pulso.
ZUMIX SPROUTS
Through ZUMIX Sprouts, younger participants interested in being involved in ZUMIX have an opportunity to find out what ZUMIX has to offer. Sprouts programs and activities are generally for students ages 7-13 and act as a
"feeder" for higher level ZUMIX involvement. Sprouts participants tour their community and visit local senior centers to share their performances. Sprouts classes involve introductions to music, theater, and dance with an emphasis on stage and performance techniques.
