ZUMIX's own DiverCity Band & Special Guest Leo Colon Quartet

Founded in 2001 by instructors Leo Colon and Mario Aranda, DIVER CITY has been the band of choice to represent ZUMIX in some of the high profile events in which our organization has participated for over 10 years. DIVER CITY is comprised of some of the most accomplished ZUMIX students and, as the name implies, performs a wide variety of music with focus on Classic and Contemporary Pop Rock, Latin as well as originals. The instrumentation consist of: vocals, Electric and Acoustic Guitars, keyboards, Electric bass, Drums and Percussion.  Our members range from 9 to 17 years of age and our line up changes periodically to allow other ZUMIX students to participate and also to keep DIVER CITY always fresh and energetic.

Born in the Dominican Republic, his education includes attending the Conservatorio Nacional de Santo Domingo in 1986, where he studied Classical Guitar. Leo taught himself Jazz guitar and in 1991 joined the first Jazz Ensemble of The Conservatorio directed by Crispin Fernandez. In Santo Domingo Leo was the headliner at one of the Conciertos de Jazz Astwoods in 1992, and more recently at Jazz in Dominicana concerts to celebrate his 10 year absence from the Dominican Jazz Scene. At Berklee College Leo studied with Jack Pezzaneli and Richie Hart. He also attended the John Payne Music Center (JPMC) in Brookline. Performances in Boston Include Ryles, Bob's the Chef, Leo started teaching at ZUMIX in 1998 and is the co-founder and co-director of The Diver City Band from Zumix. Leo's performances are and exciting mix of traditional Jazz with latin feel.

SIGN UP FOR RUN TO THE BEAT

Join ZUMIX for a fun-filled weekend starting with Run to the Beat 5k Road Race to support ZUMIX that will start and finish in East Boston's magnificent Piers Park. We're running to celebrate the work of youth arts organization ZUMIX, so count on grooving to first-rate music along the way. We'll have awards and prizes for the fastest runners and plenty of giveaways and yummy local food for the rest of us.

Do you hear the beat? Lace up your sneakers - let's run.

EAST BOSTON HARVEST FESTIVAL 2010

Sunday, September 12

2-6pm @ Piers Park

As ZUMIX’s summer concert series comes to an end, join us as we celebrate the beginning of the fall season with our 14th annual Harvest Festival for East Boston residents! Compete for prizes and the title for best-baked apple pie and locally grown harvest. There will be free food, live music, games, and family activities during the festival and competition. All exhibits should be brought to the Harvest Festival at Piers Park on Marginal Street in East Boston and registered on Sunday, September 12th 2010. Registration will open at 2:00 pm.

BAKING COMPETEION DETAILS

Individual Fruit and Vegetables

You may enter up to 3 different types of fruit and 3 types of vegetable. Please enter enough of any single type to judge (i.e., 2 apples, 3 apricots, 10 cherries, etc).

Harvest Basket, Flower Arrangement, and Canned or Sealed Goods

You may enter one “Harvest Basket,” one “Harvest Flower Arrangement,” and one of each type of canned or sealed good into this competition. The baskets should contain an assortment of fruits and/or vegetables or flowers arranged attractively. Canned or sealed goods should be in a transparent container to allow judges to see inside for judging.

Apple Pie

There will be an individual apple pie baking competition and a second one allowing East Boston restaurants to go head to head for the title of best apple pie in town!
